Who lives in my pantry, or How to organize storage space properly


A list of the main ingredients, based on their nutritional value and greater or lesser availability to Russian vegetarians.

My mother always says: “The refrigerator should be locked under the door!” Apparently, he remembers not very well-fed Soviet times, when everything had to be harvested for the future. I remembered this when I asked myself: what, in fact, should be a vegetarian pantry? Given that we do not live in London and not near a hypermarket, in which at any time of the day there is a special shelf "For vegans", where there are foods, vitamins, and other innermost ...

Of course, everyone will have a different shopping list: it depends on the tastes, the number of vegans in the family and other points. But - not much more in common. I made a list of the main ingredients based on their nutritional value and availability to Russian vegetarians. It turned out that everything is not too complicated.

Think of “grab on the fly” when “cook run”!

Let's start with the main thing. First of all, stock up on those foods that will allow you to cook quick and easy dishes. What does a lazy vegetarian need?

  • veggie burgers

  • salted pretzels and vegan delicatessen slices

And now - the products themselves, with a list and with short comments.

Ideal pasta are those made from whole grain flour. (No matter how much I searched for them, I never found them, I will be grateful for any hint). Macaroni made from high-quality durum wheat is quite good. The question is not as simple as it seems, so it’s better to learn and remember the criteria for choosing the “right” pasta.

Brown rice is preferable, and it contains much more valuable nutrients than rice polished white or steamed. Wild rice (although this is not rice, strictly speaking) is also very suitable for us.

Beans, Peas, Lentils

There are no restrictions. Fortunately, there are so many legumes on store shelves today that boredom will not occur. White and red beans, pinto and black-eyed, French lentils, pink and black, common peas, green, chickpeas, and other other. And you can’t count dishes from these products!

Sugar. This product is harder. Sugar is generally one of the most difficult nutritional problems, because any substitute is not perfect. If you as a vegan consider it permissible to use honey, then this is your decision. If not, consider using agave nectar, maple syrup, or stevia. But these products are controversial.

Why is it undesirable to use sugar, because it is of vegetable origin? The expected answer: vegan food is also a healthy diet. Therefore, it limits the intake of simple carbohydrates.

Whole grain flour. It is permissible to bake from ordinary flour 1 and premium.

In addition, at hand should be: baking powder, nutritional yeast, vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa powder.

Vegetarian Basics

  • Soy sauce
  • Miso (soya paste, sold in Japanese cuisine departments)
  • Tahini (sesame paste: you can cook it yourself)
  • Vegetable broth (frozen)
  • Soy milk (if there is a special “soy cow” at home - an apparatus that makes such a drink, because I don’t see it in stores, but you can get soybeans)
  • Olive oil, sesame oil
  • Balsamic Vinegar, Rice Vinegar
  • Walnut oils (walnuts, grape seed, peanut)

Vegan Spices

Spices - this is what creates a taste of life in its purest form. Without spices, life is fresh. Any of the existing spices is essentially vegan, so the choice is unlimited.

Buying something exotic, do not forget to prepare dry everyday herbs and powdered vegetables: parsley, dill, onions, garlic, etc.

Natural selection

A total audit of all available stocks is what has to be done first. Free the shelves, niches, and cabinets from the products and examine them carefully. Do not hesitate to get rid of suspicious seizures, expired breakfast cereals, stale cereals and anything that does not inspire confidence. Carefully disassemble the jars of spices. Remember that most of them are stored for no longer than 6–8 months. So throw away the missing condiments and replenish the nearly used ones.

After the audit is successfully completed, you need to do sorting. Then it will be easier to organize the order on the shelves, and you will find any products in two accounts. Divide everything edible into separate “thematic” groups: vegetable and fruit rolls in glass jars, tin cans, bottles with oils and vinegar, packs with pasta and cereals, boxes with cereals and cereals, cookies and dry snacks. Be sure to check the safety of the packages and, if necessary, wipe off the dust from them.

To clean up your pantry quickly and easily, follow a simple, clear schedule. Rearrange products every week if they are accidentally moved to other shelves during this time. Once a month, carry out a general sorting so that new products do not get out of the system. Have a thorough check of provisions every three months. Thanks to this, you do not have to completely disassemble the pantry at all.

DIY cleanliness

The next large-scale task is to clean up the pantry itself. Since we are dealing with food here, it is better to refuse household chemicals. But baking soda, table or any other vinegar and plain water will be just right. In addition to them, stock up on a small bucket or basin, rubber gloves, washing sponges and napkins.

The first step is to remove dust from all surfaces. Start with the top shelves and gradually go down to the bottom. Stay a little longer in the corners and at the joints of shelves and walls - the most persistent pollution accumulates here. Most effectively, they are handled by special universal cleaning wipes that do not require additional detergents. Soft, durable and pleasant to the touch, they absorb dust and moisture well, leaving no residue.

Now you can move on to wet cleaning. Dilute vinegar and water in a bucket in a ratio of 1: 2. If you have wooden surfaces, pour in 0.5 tsp. vegetable oil. This combination will effectively clean the wood and revitalize its color. For a delicate, pleasant aroma, add a couple drops of any essential oil to the solution. Moisten a regular dishwashing sponge in the solution and wipe all surfaces.

Sprinkle old spots from leaked products with soda and pour a little water on top. After 5-10 minutes, rub the area and remove any remaining soda. Use special sponges for intensive cleaning. The hard abrasive side copes well with complex dirt. Soft foam is suitable for wet cleaning in general. Do not leave the shelves wet - this can cause mold. Go through all the shelves and drawers with absorbent wipes. They deeply absorb moisture, leaving the surface perfectly dry and clean.

Holiday for the perfectionist

Now you can arrange the products in their places. Remember that we have already sorted them into groups? Our task is to distribute them compactly in such a form on the shelves. Store supplies that will not be needed soon, away to the upper shelves. Everyday products (cereals, beans, flour, spices, sugar) put on the nearest shelves at eye level. Massive heavy cans and bags are wiser to leave below.

Different types of practical devices will help to place products compactly. It is convenient to store coffee, tea, crackers and other dry food in containers or boxes with lids. Retractable baskets, small drawers and racks serve the same purposes. Jars with different blanks can be sorted using shelf dividers. The trifles important in the household can be hidden in hanging organizers with many cells and hung on the door or wall.

Be sure to sign home supplies or stick stickers with an exact indication of the contents and the date of manufacture. Labels will not interfere with bulk products. At least not to mix salt with soda or starch. Experienced housewives are advised to label the shelves themselves so that order always reigns in the pantry, and households easily find the necessary products.

If you store vegetables in reserve, remember: only root vegetables, cabbage, bell peppers and gourds can be stored here. Cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini and other watery vegetables in such conditions deteriorate very quickly. For potatoes and onions, you can arrange a boardwalk directly on the floor. Just remember to pick vegetables from time to time.

Special storage systems

Prefabricated storage systems are sold for pantries, where you yourself can choose the necessary elements (rails, shelves, drawers, containers) in the right amount and arrange them as conveniently. Sometimes such a system looks like a continuous rack where the place of each element is already predetermined by the manufacturer, but in most cases it is still very convenient.

The basis of any pantry is a rack. If you have a shallow niche at your disposal, you can simply integrate regular shelves into it. With a large depth of a niche or cabinet, shelves it is better to place the letter P or G on the walls or place objects in boxes that are easy to pull out as a whole, or in drawers / drawers. By the same logic, it is better not to choose too deep racks in the pantry-room.

Boxes, baskets and wardrobe trunks

Boxes and baskets for solid contents and wardrobe trunks for soft, such as home textiles and seasonal clothes, will make it possible to better organize storage in the pantry. For trifles, you can use mini chests of drawers with drawers. Boxes not only help to occupy the entire depth of the shelf without losing the convenience of extracting the contents, it is also a guarantee that things of the same type will be put together and not mix. Above all, do not forget to sign the boxes for convenience.

It is convenient to put a large box or box on wheels under the rack.

Containers and metal baskets

A large number of medium-sized items can be stacked in such containers, devoting each basket to a thematic filling. The advantage of containers and baskets is that, unlike boxes, they can not only be placed on shelves, but also made retractable or hung on the wall as an independent element.


For storage in the pantry, you can use both organizer modules for shelves and hinged pockets. It does not matter for what purpose the organizer was provided by the seller, this may be the ideal format for your particular task. However, if it is possible to find highly specialized organizers (for example, for cans or garbage bags), it is unlikely that the alternatives will be more convenient.

The bar or railing will not take up much space: they can be attached under any of the shelves of the rack or directly on the wall. On railing hooks you can hang frequently used equipment (scissors or a scoop) or attach baskets for small things. You can also hang a regular hanger with clips on the railing - it’s so convenient to store opened bags with loose products or fragile contents.

Door storage

Do not forget about the space of the cabinet door or pantry - this is a great place to store: you can hang a horizontal organizer on the door or place small baskets or shelves with sides so that the contents do not fall when the door moves.

Shelf dividers

To ensure that the free-standing contents of the shelf do not mix and each item has its own place, place vertical dividers.

Horizontal dividers can also be useful: such a mini-shelf on the legs allows you to use the height of the shelving shelf to the maximum - you can put something both under the divider and on it.

Of course, you can immediately choose a rack with compartments of different sizes and heights, but then you have to adapt to it, while the dividers will help you adjust the rack to your needs.

Bottle storage

A few tips for last:

  • Divide the pantry into semantic zones: for example, these three shelves are cleaning, and these five are products. If necessary, divide each zone into smaller zones.
  • Do not forget to leave a place for long objects: vacuum cleaner, mop, ski.
  • Use slate stickers to sign the contents of cans and boxes: the labels on them are easy to change.
  • Occupy the entire height of the pantry and store a stepladder there.
