The advantages of a sheet on an elastic band are obvious: it does not go astray, does not frown and always looks neat. Sewing such a sheet is easy - follow the steps shown in the master class.

You will need:

- a finished sheet without an elastic band (if its size is sufficient - see the paragraph on constructing a pattern) or a fabric of the right size (choose a fabric of maximum width, if necessary, fabric will have to be adjusted),

- sewing machine or overlock, thread,

- a centimeter tape, pencil or marker for marking the fabric.

1. We measure a mattress

The first thing to do is measure your mattress. Take measurements on the width (a in the picture), the length (b) and the thickness of the mattress ©. Add 1.5 cm to each measure for a fit. Also add 13-15 cm on each side for those parts of the sheet that will be located at the bottom of the mattress.

2. We cut fabric

Cutting consists in cutting the edges of the sheet / fabric to the desired width and length and in cutting 4 squares in the corners. The length f (side of the cut square, see picture) should be 13-15 cm, which you added for the inside of the sheet + the thickness of the mattress. The whole canvas without cut squares should correspond to the size of your mattress + 1.5 cm on each side, which you added to fit.

3. Sew corners

The sides of the squares need to be sewn so that the marks X and O coincide (see picture). Fold the fabric with the sides facing inward and sew the edges of the squares on the overlock or sew on the machine, then sewing the edge with a zigzag. Handle the edge of the resulting sheet with an overlock or zigzag on a typewriter.

4. Sew an elastic band

Sew or pin the end of the elastic tape with a pin on the inside of the sheet, departing from the edge about 1-1.5 cm. When stretching the elastic, sew it in a zigzag around the entire perimeter of the sheet.

5. We process the edge

Tuck the edge of the sheet with the elastic sewn in and sew along the edge, stretching the fabric with the elastic properly.

Drawstring Option

You can not sew on the elastic with a zigzag, but draw a drawstring along the edge of the sheet, where you will then sell the elastic. In this case, the ends of the elastic tape after being threaded into the drawstring will need to be tightly stitched together.

Advantages and disadvantages

Modern beds are equipped with a variety of mattresses from latex to spring. Sometimes the height of the product can reach 25-30 cm, and in order to make such a bed a sheet with an elastic band, you need to use two simple sheets for sewing it. But first, these sheets are sewn into one fabric, and only then the elastic is sewn.

If all the rules of sewing in the required sizes are observed, then sheets with an elastic band will fit the mattress rather tightly, while the shape will remain unchanged. On the trading floors, such goods are always available. New-fashioned sheets have proved themselves from the very best sides: they do not crumple and “keep” their shape. But not everyone can afford it, so willy-nilly for many housewives the question arises of how to do such a thing with their own hands.

Nothing is impossible here. Manufacturing technology is not complicated. Benefits from the application:

  • an elastic sheet looks aesthetically pleasing,
  • it’s more functional, it doesn’t crumple and doesn’t knock together,
  • the mattress is practically invisible, less dirty
  • on children's beds sheets with an elastic band are irreplaceable, especially when the film is located on them.

Among the shortcomings, the fact that the sheet is inconvenient to iron is noted. During storage, it is best to roll up the products in small rolls, which can be compactly stored in a linen closet.

Shape selection

Cotton or linen material is best suited for sewing a sheet 160x200 cm. Linen is a fairly dense fabric that can withstand a large number of washings. It absorbs moisture well and allows air to pass through. Flax and cotton do not accumulate electrostatic charges, do not provoke skin irritation and allergies.

Of the cotton fabrics, calico and satin are considered the best-selling. They are ideal for any season and are considered wear-resistant, have a good coefficient of thermal conductivity.

To make the right choice of size, first of all, you need to set the exact dimensions of the mattress. There is a label on any product of this kind, and it contains all the necessary information:

  • the first line says the length of the product,
  • the second confirms the width,
  • the third name is the height of the mattress.

The sheet may be oval or round in accordance with the shape of the mattress. Rectangular shapes are most often for adults. The sizes of the sheets are as follows (in centimeters):

Euro products are most often one color, so making a choice does not present any difficulty - only in size. Knitted sheets are very good - they are plastic and soft. They retain their shape after many cycles of passing through the washing machine. And also they can not be ironed, which is an advantage. Modern paints are stable, so things do not fade over time.

Calculation of the required amount of material

To calculate the required amount of fabric for an elastic sheet, you need to understand the parameters of the mattress. If the bed with the mattress is 122x62 cm in size, and the height of the mattress is 14 cm, then the calculation should be done in this way:

To the numbers 122 and 62 are added 14 cm (the height of the mattress). In this case, a parameter of 136x76 cm will be obtained. In order to sew in an elastic band, you will need a certain amount of matter, about 3 cm from all sides. It turns out that the material will need 139x79 cm.

Create Pattern

In order to properly cut the material, you should make a diagram - a drawing, otherwise there is a real opportunity to use up excess material.

Using a ruler and a triangle, draw a diagram on a blank sheet of paper in a 1: 4 scale, adding the height of the mattress to the sketchy quadrilateral. Then, according to the obtained parameters, a paper pattern is made (newspaper or whatman paper). The finished template is applied to the expanded fabric (it can be spread on the floor or table).

It should be borne in mind that cotton fabrics shrink. If you sew a sheet on an elastic band from calico 230 cm wide, then you should take the fabric with a margin, that is, approximately 265 cm.

The pattern will be made on the fabric itself, so it should be perfectly smooth. On each side 10-12 cm is added, they will go to the lining of the mattress, also a small amount of material for the elastic should be taken into account.

It will be necessary to harmoniously “fit” all four corners so that there are no deformations of the fabric. Before starting work, it is recommended to check each parameter several times. It is important that the pattern matches the mattress to be 100%. Sometimes, for various reasons, you have to build up the fabric, this should be done at the top, then the seam will be located under the pillows. It is recommended to remember:

  • complicated bending does not make sense, you can easily get confused,
  • the wider the gum, the greater the safety margin it has,
  • the corners of the resulting rectangle should be rounded, so each edge should be tucked 0.8 cm, it should also be ironed well,
  • 3 cm indent and a seam is sewn.

It is worth considering the presence of a small gap in the stitching of the seam where the braid will be inserted. A ribbon is attached to the ribbon and inserted into the drawstring, stretching the elastic along the entire perimeter of the sheet. Both ends of the tape are then fastened together or each separately.

The following should be noted as recommendations:

  • the elastic should be ten centimeters longer than the perimeter of the mattress itself, and after inserting it into the drawstring, it is set to the required amount of tension with trimming the extra length,
  • natural fabric should be washed, then dried and ironed so that it shrinks.

Step-by-step description of product manufacturing

In order to sew a sheet on an elastic band with your own hands, you should learn a small master class.

A piece of fabric is usually taken 2x1 m. If the required size is not enough, then one of the two old sheets can be made. Most often, hygroscopic fabrics are suitable for sheets:

There are also materials made up of flax, cotton, PVC threads. Flannel and knitwear are also popular, they are soft and pleasant to the touch. In the cold season, sheets of such materials are preferable. The advantage of these materials is that they are flexible and well stretched. There is no need to make complex calculations taking into account shrinkage tolerances, it is in this paragraph that errors and inaccuracies are most often encountered.

Traditional natural material cannot “work” without shrinkage, therefore a margin of 10-15 cm should always be added in the calculations. After all the necessary calculations have been completed, the material is fixed at corner points. Once again, everything should be carefully measured, writing down all the parameters. The smaller the error, the better the thing will turn out, the longer it will serve. If no questions arise, then sewing with two seams is done at all angles. The crown of labor will be a full-fledged cover, which should fit the mattress tightly.

To insert an elastic band into a material, there are two ways.

  1. In the first option, the edges of the fabric are folded around the entire perimeter, from the outer face you should sew a tape or braid.
  2. The second option is when matter is bent around the entire perimeter, you get a seam, which in professional use is called: drawstring. Then the elastic is passed, the ends of which are securely fastened.

Most often, these two methods are used, since they are simple and reliable.

As already mentioned, ironing such bedding is difficult, therefore, professionals often use the third method of inserting gum. The elastic is fastened only at the corners, respectively, 22 centimeters will remain at each corner, that is, approximately 85-90 cm will be required. The material is also bent by ironing, the fabric is sewn at the corners. Then all places are trimmed on a typewriter. You can do everything in three hours.

Last method: clasps are fixed at the corner points of the sheet. Clasps are called elastic bands in a professional environment. For greater reliability and strength, transverse tapes are also often used. In the last two versions, the sheet can be reduced by 6 cm.

The sheet has an additional fastening, which means that it can be stretched even more. In addition, from such a technology significant savings in matter. In many good hotels, you can find on the mattresses the so-called suspenders - these are retainers that really resemble this piece of clothing.

As additional devices for fixing the tension sheets, various clamps or clips are used that are mounted on the edging or clamp the edge. Such simple devices can double the life of the fabric. * +

Eraser sheets are in demand in the infectious diseases wards of many hospitals. It is an effective tool that prevents the spread of pathogenic microbes on the mattress. This factor allows you to save tangible funds on unscheduled disinfection.

Ironing such things is a simple matter: the sheet is turned out by corners to the outside, they are folded together, then ironed in the “Steam” mode.

Eraser sheets should be washed using a substance that softens the fibers of the fabric and makes the water softer. After the wash is finished, it is recommended to check the matter for the presence of small items of washing, they sometimes get there.

Often an elastic sheet is used as a mattress cover, which protects the product from contamination. Such a simple accessory extends the life of mattresses, especially latex ones. The topic is quite relevant, because such mattresses are quite expensive. The fabric for these purposes is most often used dense - linen or cotton.

Measures for pattern sheets on an elastic band

It is quite difficult to sew a sheet on an elastic band with your own hands, despite the apparent simplicity. The width of the calico is a maximum of 220 cm, and in order to fill a high mattress with a sheet of rubber, 200 cm wide, you need 260 cm.In addition, accurately repeating the rounded corners of the mattress on sheets with elastic, which are rarely square, is very difficult. Without experience, you risk spoiling the fabric, or at best, the corners will shift and they will puff.

Before you build a pattern of a sheet on an elastic band and especially cut a calico or chintz, it’s worthwhile to calculate and check everything well. And for rounded corners it is better to make a small pattern (Y). You can even make it together with a twist of tissue paper or newspaper and make sure that the corner is laid out correctly, accurately repeating the contour of the mattress.
To connect the seams and adjust such a pattern, you can use tape, and then cut the “seams” with scissors. The corrected angle pattern should be used for further calculations of the sheet.

Fabric consumption for an elastic sheet

The current standard for the width of calico, calico is 220 cm. From this width of the fabric, you can sew any sheet, but only if it is not with an elastic band. For tailoring a sheet with rubber, it is additionally required to “build up” one of the sides of the sheet.

Let's first calculate (see the drawing) how much fabric you need to buy for the conditional size of the mattress: length - 200 cm, width - 180 cm, height - 20, and 15 cm for hem.
It turned out that for such a mattress you need a whole piece of fabric measuring 2.70 cm by 2.50 cm. The width of the fabric (220cm) is not enough, whatever one may say. It is necessary to increase one edge by at least 20 cm, forgetting about the beautiful fabric pattern, since it will be located across the bed. That is why do not buy calico for a sheet with an elastic band with a large pattern (especially animals), it is better to buy a calico with a small pattern or geometric abstract shapes.

When the manufacturer of bedding sets the width of the calico or calico 220cm, in reality it is still wider, and sometimes reaches 227-230cm.
It is better to extend the sheet at the top of the bed, since the connecting seam under the pillows will be almost invisible. But only if the calico has a clearly defined pattern, this area will, on the contrary, be more noticeable.
In a word, in order to sew a sheet on an elastic band with the given sizes, we need almost 3 meters of coarse calico 220 cm wide (270 + 30), where 30 cm is added to one of the sides.

How to make a hem for an elastic sheet

The advantages of a rubber sheet are obvious. The sheet is always “made up”, it does not slip and does not slip, the bed looks neat and fresh. The only negative is that it costs more than a standard sheet and the consumption of fabric, depending on the width of the hem, increases significantly. Well, the sewing work itself is much more complicated. You will be convinced of this when you start sewing it with your own hands. But before sewing, let's get back to tailoring again.

Actually, you do not need to do a sheet pattern on paper, of course. Instead of paper for the pattern will serve as a fabric. Moreover, it is better to draw all the necessary lines with a simple pencil, since the wrong side of the calico or calico is always lighter than the front. After marking, take scissors and cut, just do not forget about allowances for the connecting seams.

Be sure to think over and check in advance how wide the bottom hem will suit you, which elastic band to use for the sheet, where to make the connecting seam, etc. But more on that below.

So, after you have finished the general calculations, and you know what the width and length of the sheet will be (in the “expanded”) form, you need to decide what width to bend. Too deep bending securely fixes the sheet on the mattress, especially if the elastic passes completely around the sheet. Actually, this is how it should be, but is it always justified? Firstly, the consumption of fabric will increase significantly, which means the cost of the sheet. Secondly, the cut will become more complicated (additional torsion angles), the gum consumption will increase, and most importantly, you can get confused in these “corners” so that everything gets messed up. Even an experienced seamstress, taking up this work for the first time, gets confused in the calculations, not to mention lovers.

Try to sew a sheet on an elastic band with a minimum twist (5-7cm), insert the elastic only at its corners, and for sure everything will be fine if you correctly cut and assemble the corners.
After the calculations of the pattern are completed, and you are once again convinced of their accuracy, you can transfer them to the fabric and cut out the extra lower corner sections.

To the top of the sheet, where a piece of calico will grow, an angle is not required to be cut, since the connecting seam of this piece extends from corner to corner. Look at the fabric flow calculation diagram (above), it is marked with a white dashed line. But this must be checked, perhaps you will succeed differently.

Naturally, when cutting a sheet with an elastic band, you need to take into account the allowances for the seams and for folding the sheets. Do not hope to find complete instructions on how to do this or that in detail.

To check whether the pattern is precisely marked, measure not the width and length of the sheet, but the diagonals (from corner to corner) of the mattress and the pattern, they should almost coincide. The sheet should have a little more, because the fabric can still shrink when washing, and they will not be extra 1-1.5 cm.

When cutting the oval of an angle, do not forget to leave allowances for seams and figure out how to process the angle, what to sew with and in what sequence.

How to sew a sheet on an elastic band with your own hands

Well, here we are "got" to the sewing machine, and now we will sew a sheet.
Suture processing can be done with an overlock, if you have one, but not with a zigzag on the sewing machine Chaika, and then for reliability, make an additional connecting line next to the overlock.

You can connect the seams with a linen seam, but it will be too coarse and stand out strongly, especially at the corners.
Sewing threads should be selected durable, but not too thick. The main thing is that they do not collapse due to moisture, and holes do not appear in the seams over time. If you want the seam to be “eternal”, pick up a strong thread, for example LH-45.
Set the stitch step on the sewing machine to medium. Too small a stitch will not make the seam stronger, but even vice versa, since the needle, often piercing the fabric, can simply destroy its fibers.

How to process the edge of the sheet hem

How to properly handle the edge of the hem sheet? To begin, count how much gum is needed. It depends on the quality of the gum itself. If it is weak and stretches very much, then after washing it will become even weaker. It is better not to adjust such an elastic band to the edge of the hem of the sheet, but to insert it into the hem in a circle.

At least you can adjust it (pull it up) as needed, especially after numerous washes. But the elastic can also be sewn with a zigzag along the edge, as in the photo. It is better to do this with the help of a special foot and you need to sew on the elastic band in a wide (maximum) step, since the elastic band may weaken from frequent punctures with a needle.

A wide elastic band (2-3cm) can also be sewn along the edge of the sheet, it gives good saving of calico when cutting, since large allowances for bending are not required. In addition, a wide elastic band will last longer, since the sheet has to be washed very often and the thin elastic band stretches and weakens over time and if it is sewn with a zigzag, it will be quite difficult to replace it.

Accessories for fixing sheets on an elastic band

Sometimes, in order for the corners and the middle of the sheet to be well pulled together, special clasps are used, like suspenders for trousers. This is a very practical, inexpensive and effective device. True, it cannot replace the elastic in the corners, but in the complex it pulls the sheet on the mattress well.

Clasps are not only angular, but also transverse. The sheet receives additional fixation due to them and is stretched from all sides, like a cover on a mattress. Using klaamers, the lower turn can be reduced to 5-7 cm, which will reduce the consumption of calico, especially this will be noticeable when several sheets are sewn at once.

As a result, you now know how to sew a sheet on an elastic band with your own hands. You know that you need to buy about 3 meters of calico 220 cm wide. You also need to buy linen gum about 5 meters. To check the accuracy of the made pattern, you need to compare the diagonals of the mattress and the sheets, they should be the same.
And the last, calico or chintz after washing shrinks, so make a small increase (2-3cm) to the width and length of your elastic sheet.

Building patterns

On a sheet of paper we are building a simple construction of a future sheet on a scale. We draw a rectangle of the mattress with allowance for seam allowances. In our case, this is a rectangle of 162x202 cm.

Further, from the vertices of the resulting rectangle, we lay on all sides the length of the mattress + 10 cm. Note: 10 cm is an allowance for fitting the bottom of the mattress, as well as an allowance for the drawstring for elastic. That is, for our drawing 25cm + 10 cm = 35 cm.

Now we consider the fabric consumption: we will need a piece with a width of 162 + 35 + 35 = 230 cm, a length of 202 + 35 + 35 = 272 cm. It should be remembered that natural fabrics shrink when washing an average of 5% for weft and 2% for the base. Before sewing, the fabric must be decanted (soaked in warm water, dried and ironed).

When buying fabric - add a percentage to shrink !! For example, for a sheet on a 160x200x25 mattress, a piece of fabric 240-250 cm wide and 280 cm long is suitable.
