How to install the motherboard in the system unit: instruction


Hello dear visitor of the site! In this article, you will learn how to install a motherboard in a chassis (system unit).
The motherboard is a part of the system unit, to which all the main details of a personal computer are connected: processor, cooler, video card, RAM, hard drive.

And so let's get started installing the motherboard in the chassis (system unit). For this we need: a case with power supply and a set of bolts, usually a set of bolts is located inside the case (system unit), when buying a system unit.

Now we open the front cover of the system unit, then we fit the motherboard inside the system unit to see where we will tighten the screws to fix the motherboard in the system unit.
After you have seen where you will screw the bolts into the system unit, pull out the motherboard and tighten the bolts where your motherboard will be mounted.

After you tightened the bolts in your system unit, again install the motherboard inside the system unit and screw the motherboard through the screws to the system unit.

Then, from the power supply, we find the 4-pin power connector and connect to the ATX_12V motherboard connector, then we find the 24-pin power connector and connect to the ATX motherboard connector.

We connected the power to the motherboard, and it remains for us to connect the wires from the case to the connector of the motherboard F_PANEL
And so we find F_PANEL on our motherboard and connect the wires from the case HDD-LED, PWR-LED, PWR-SW, RESET-SW, SPEAKER. PWR-SW - serves to turn on the computer.

Installing the motherboard: step 1

It is necessary to remove the cover from the computer case. If your device has two side covers, then you need to remove both. This is done so that access to the motherboard is free, and the process of dismantling and installation is more accessible. It is also convenient to remove the panel for the board from the case. This maneuver will simplify the installation process, saving you from working in an uncomfortable position. But it is worth noting that not all computer cases are equipped with a removable panel.

Before installing the motherboard in the system unit with your own hands, the settings of the operating system and driver must be reset. This is due to the fact that the change of such an important component implies the construction of a new system with new spare parts. You cannot install a new motherboard without formatting the system disks and reinstalling all the software. When removing the system unit cover, it is important not to lose the fixing bolts. They are best put aside in some small box.

Before installing the motherboard in the system unit, it is imperative that you ground yourself for electrical protection. This is due to the fact that the human body has the ability to accumulate a charge of static electricity, which can cause a short circuit or overload of the internal elements of the system unit. You can remove the charge by touching the water from the tap. You can also wear an antistatic wristband that will keep your equipment safe and sound.

The motherboard usually comes with a connector board, which is placed at the back of the system unit case. Thanks to this panel, the user can connect a monitor, mouse, keyboard and other peripheral devices. It is necessary to replace the standard board with a new one. It should be so.

  1. Press down on the four corners of the detachable panel. When you insert it into the case, clicks are characteristic, making it clear that the panel has fixed.
  2. After installation, you need to check the correct location of the front side connectors by comparing with the connectors on the motherboard.

The next step: you need to find racks that prevent the motherboard from touching the body of the system unit (another function is additional cooling). Your own racks must be included with the board, which can be installed if they are missing. Installing racks should not cause any problems. It is necessary to correlate the holes for the racks on the motherboard and the racks themselves on the case. Before tightening, make sure that all racks are in place. Due to the differences in the manufacturers of cases and motherboards, the holes may not coincide, therefore it is recommended to fix as many racks as possible.

Preliminary preparation

Install the motherboard into the computer after the processor with the cooler, RAM, and, possibly, a solid-state drive connected via the M.2 slot are mounted on it. This will require some preliminary preparation.

Usually, the back cover of the system unit is not tightly sealed, but there are no holes here either - there are only plugs that can be removed as needed to allow access to ports on the motherboard and other accessories.

These are usually thin metal plates that can be broken with a simple screwdriver. Most often, you need to free the slot for the connectors on the motherboard, as well as the video card and sound card, if its presence is provided for by the configuration.

There can be several such plates, and which one to remove depends on where exactly the ports on the motherboard will be located - audio outputs, LAN, USB, mouse and keyboard sockets, etc.

It is important to remember that complete with any motherboard comes a special plug with holes suitable for the location of all these ports. Its installation is not just a tribute to aesthetics: such a plate prevents excess dust from entering the body.

If suddenly, after a complete assembly of the computer, it suddenly turns out that you forgot to install it, you will have to dismantle the motherboard, since it is impossible to install the plug from the outside: they do not give the stops, which, when correctly positioned, rest against the back cover of the case and prevent the plug from slipping out.

We figure out how to install the motherboard in the system unit on the racks. Before tightening the bolts, the connectors must be aligned with the plug-in board. A few tips:

  • no need to tighten the bolts very much,
  • when installing the motherboard, you can not use an electric screwdriver,
  • it is better not to use non-metallic fasteners (or you need to put cardboard linings under them).

When the bolts are installed in the racks, you can begin to connect the components:

Seating and installation

The design of most modern ATX form factor enclosures, regardless of brand (Zalman, Chieftec, GameMax, Spire, or any other), provides for motherboards and other formats - at least mATX, but usually this list is wider.

Since all components are standardized, the holes on the motherboard for mounting bolts are in the same places.Bolts are screwed into special hexagonal studs, and those, in turn, directly into the housing itself.

Usually there are more sockets for studs than holes on the motherboard, and they are located so that by screwing the studs in different places, you can fix motherboards of different sizes in the same standard case.

Therefore, it is enough to compare the holes on the motherboard with the seats under the hairpin and screw them where necessary. No tools will be required for this: the quickest and most convenient way is to do it manually.

As a rule, a set of all necessary fasteners is supplied with the case. Moreover, they are always in abundance, so do not be surprised if after assembly there are extra screws and studs (and it’s better to keep them).

After installing the motherboard, it must be secured to the studs using screws. To do this, use a regular Phillips screwdriver. Fasten the screws with a little effort, but not excessive, so as not to damage the motherboard.

Board Installation: Step 5

At this stage, you can connect the power from the network to the computer. If you have forgotten which pin connectors are inserted where, then refer to the instructions or manual. Then you need to connect the buttons and indicators on the front panel of the case. To do this, the corresponding wires are connected to the corresponding contacts on the board. These include:

  • on and off button,
  • reset button
  • HDD power and load indicator,
  • speaker.

Also connect the USB ports to the labeled pins on the motherboard. Next, connect the coolers for the processor and the case with power contacts having the required number of metal contacts. Install the hard drives in the chassis racks and use the SATA cable to connect them to the connectors. A required component is a graphics card. It must be inserted into a suitable connector.

In order for the next time it is more convenient to carry out the replacement of components, sticking out wires is better to tie with ties, distributing the wiring inside the case. After all operations, close the system unit covers by tightening the bolts into the sockets. But how to install the motherboard in the ASUS system unit?
