Decorative corners on the corners of the walls: features of application

This technique of decorating the corners of the walls - protective corners - not everyone likes, but there are no special alternatives. In any case, on the walls pasted with wallpaper, the corner is still better than sticking out and torn canvases.

Only one solution to the integrity of the wallpaper without the use of decorative corners is available - to make not a sharp angle of repose, but rounded. In this case, there will be no problem with its decoration. You can simply wrap the canvas, without cutting it. But you need to bring out the corner perfectly, otherwise you will have to cut it again, which means that the question again arises of protecting the junction of the wallpaper on the corner.

It is important to choose the right decorative corner so that it does not look alien. There are special tricks for this.

The interior in the appropriate style looks good

Choose the corners to protect the corners of the walls based on the overall design of the room. There are several standard solutions:

In tone with wall decoration. Full color matching is desirable, and even better if the texture is similar.

Either in tone with the decoration of the walls, or in tone with the doors

One option, quite logical

In general, you need to choose the corners to protect the corners of the walls tied to the design of the room. This can be done already after the furniture is placed and the textiles are hung. In this case, it is easier to imagine the final result. Because the picture in our heads can be very different from reality.

One of the transparent protective corners

If you don’t manage to choose an acceptable color, and you need to protect the corners in the apartment, pay attention to the transparent plastic corners. They are of different types - rigid, flexible, with different wall thickness.

Types of protective corners: from what materials

According to the scope, corners are for external (on the street) and internal use. For now, let's talk about how to protect the corners in an apartment and a house - indoors. Let's start with the materials. Corners for protecting wall corners can be:

  • Made of plastic (PVC). Different colors, textures, there are even transparent ones.
  • Of metal. Brass, aluminum (polished and not), stainless steel, with or without paint.
  • Wooden. Of different varieties of wood, smooth, with a relief.

Cork corners to protect corners

The most common are plastic corners to protect the corners of the walls. You should not think that such protection looks wretched. In any case, no worse than frayed corners. Just plastic is different in appearance - polished, with a metallized effect, with a satin (matte) surface, with a different relief. It is clear that in order to find something specific or special, you have to run through hardware stores and markets. But there are many types of design. If the corners for protecting the corners of the walls are chosen correctly, they organically fit into the design, absolutely not attracting attention. At the same time, they protect and decorate the joints very reliably.

Shapes and sizes

Finished corners usually have a 90 ° angle. The angle itself is not always sharp; there are options with a rounded one. In appearance, the corners to protect the corners of the walls are divided into:

  • tough
    • external
    • internal
  • flexible (plastic, rubber)
  • universal.

Universal corner made of MDF

Questions can only be universal. These are two strips of plastic or MDF, connected by a thin strip of flexible material of the same color. Thanks to this connection, you can make a dull or sharp corner, internal or external - without much difference. But in terms of reliability of protection, it is inferior to tough ones - after all, the flexible part is rather thin.

It is also worth knowing that the corners can be with shelves of the same and different widths. More common with the same, but it is quite possible to find those in which one is wider, the other is narrower.

Types, shapes, sizes

The width of the shelf varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Plastic, for example, can have shelves from 10 mm to 50 mm. MDF corners are minimally made with a shelf width of 20 mm, metal - from 10 mm, but the maximum shelf length is 90 mm (aluminum). So there is plenty to choose from.

What to fix

The choice of the method of fixing the corners to protect the corners of the walls depends on the material of the corner, on what surface they will be mounted on. Most often used glue. Moreover, the leaders are "liquid nails." This is a universal composition, but before buying, make sure that a particular brand can glue the materials you need.

You can put a corner on the glue if it is even, without big flaws. If there are pits / depressions, you are unlikely to glue it. In this case, silicone may be used. If you glue white corners, silicone can take white. Under color it is better to take transparent. It is not always desirable to use acidic. Although cheaper, it can damage metals or paint.

In both cases, the wall and corner must be clean, dry. The composition is applied to the corner, it is pressed to the corner, fixed with strips of masking tape. We grab it through 40-60 cm. If everything is smooth, it is possible through 60 cm, if you need to repeat the form, after 40 cm or even more often.

How and how to glue a PVC corner to the wallpaper

Leave in this condition until the glue dries or the silicone hardens. See the exact time on the packaging. Then the masking tape can be removed. It differs from ordinary adhesive tape in that even with paper wallpapers it peels off without damaging the surface. But to be sure, try sticking and peeling in an inconspicuous place.

Foam rubber corner - L-shaped and universal on a self-adhesive basis

There is another option for how you can glue the corners on the wall with wallpaper, painting. You can use double-sided tape. Glue it first to the corner, then, having removed the protective coating, press it to the corner. There are corners to which the adhesive tape is already glued. Some types of foam rubber or plastic (usually flexible or universal).

Arch finish

The design of the arch often becomes a problem. In general, the apartment does not have many external corners, but they are mandatory on the arch. And in the aisle they very often hurt. Either furniture, then another load or a resident who simply did not fit into the opening. And since there is no direct question, the rounded part may be a problem.

And not only in the doorway can be arched arch

In general, for the arch, you can use universal corners. They are flexible, which is very convenient. There are flexible non-universal ones - plastic, made of a special polymer of increased elasticity.

But in general, for the design of arches, corners with different widths of shelves are used. They are even called arched. They have one shelf 10 mm (external), the second - internal - 30 mm or more. They bend easily. Do not twist into a bagel, but it is not difficult to get an arc of any curvature. It will only be necessary to use a reliable fixation during the drying of the glue.

This is an arched plastic corner

If you want to bend a regular corner, it is possible to make plastic warm. For this job you need a building hair dryer. Normal - for hair - will not work, because his temperature is too low. We also need a template by which we will bend a plastic corner. Take a piece of fiberboard, twist the screws or drive in nails, forming the profile that you need.

So you can arrange the corners of the arch with protective corners

They begin to bend from the middle. Warm up the site, constantly pressing in the middle, and moving a hairdryer from the center to the edges. So you need to bring the corner to the desired curvature and leave it in this position to cool. So that he does not straighten, in parallel with a number of screws, holes are made for the second row. The distance between the rows is equal to the width of the corner shelf. After the plastic is bent, insert and slightly twist the screws. After cooling the plastic, we remove them.

How to cut the finishing corners

Almost always, corners have to be cut to protect the corners of the walls. They are sold with straps from 2 to 3 meters long. The cutting tool is selected depending on the type of material. For wood and metal, thick plastic, a hacksaw is required, only the canvas is different - on wood, and with a small tooth on metal or thick-walled plastic.

Thin plastic can be cut with a construction or office knife, with sharp scissors. If you need to cut off perpendicularly, it is easier to use scissors. We cut them to an angle on both sides, bend the corner, cut the remaining millimeters with a clerical knife. If there are flaws, they can easily be fixed with the same knife or sandpaper with very fine grain (polishing).

How to cut a protective plastic corner (PVC)

If the plastic corner needs to be cut along the bend, we cut it along the inner corner with a clerical knife. Cut through the entire thickness does not make sense. It is only necessary to leave a noticeable strip. Then bend the piece to be removed. He comes off at the place of cut. Irregularities are removed with a knife or sandpaper.

How to protect corners

The profile allows you to hide under itself any kind of defects. Walls take on clear lines. Any kind of blows falls on these protective elements. Due to this, wall decoration materials retain their external attractiveness longer. Manages to avoid repairs, at least for the next few years.

Corner classification by application

According to the scope, plastic corners are usually divided into:

  • finishing - designed for outside corners,
  • profile - suitable for bathtubs,
  • arched
  • models for ceramic tiles,
  • ceiling
  • furniture
  • decorative
  • for plaster - for internal and external corners,
  • fenders - designed for doors and windows.

Corners are able to protect the wallpaper from peeling. It is possible to select the corners in appearance, depending on the characteristics of the interior. For example, if the walls are sheathed with a lining or board, you can install products with imitation of different types of wood on them. The end part of the material is protected against moisture and dust.

Materials for the manufacture of profiles

For the manufacture of profiles for walls using:

  • polyvinyl chloride
  • wood-fiber material - MDF,
  • polyurethane,
  • aluminum in alloys and in pure form.

In the manufacture of plastic corners, a special paint is also used. It provides brightness of the corner, protects them from burnout under direct sunlight.

Finishing arched openings and corners

The plastic profiles used in the decoration of arched openings are characterized by flexibility and

the presence of an extensive size range. You can stick them on openings with smooth lines without making cuts. There are colored decorative patterns. It is advisable to set the models one tone darker than paint on the wall or wallpaper. The line of the arch becomes clearer, thereby emphasizing the interior and its style.

If the floor in the room was laid with wooden boards or a laminate, decorative arched profiles with wood imitation are suitable for it. To protect corners, there are also laminated products on the market.

The width of the colored plastic elements is selected in accordance with the following parameters:

  • arch width
  • room dimensions
  • the thickness of the wall on which the opening is present,
  • ceiling height.

The recommended width of the corners increases as the parameters increase. In the presence of large elements of the interior, a narrow decorative corner for the walls can simply get lost. Wide will look unnatural if it was placed in a small hallway.

Arch Installation Tips

The length of the arched corners does not exceed 3 m. It is enough to take one ready-made strip to finish. Over time, the joints will begin to protrude, so it is important to lay them symmetrically initially.

The upper arc must be glued, starting from the central part of the arch. After that, you need to hold it in both directions. Following this, it is important to dock at the sides. Then the ends must be cleaned and glued.

Tile Products

Colored corners for tiles are made of aluminum, as well as its alloys. They equip it with a coating and polish to a mirror shine. Topcoat is applied or laminated. Thanks to this technology, the protrusions receive reliable protection. Improving the decorative characteristics of the room.

On one side of the profile there is a perforated strip equipped with cuts. They are laid on the surface of the wall or on the steps. The opposite side is decorative. On the opposite side, she has a small internal ledge. The side of the tile is inserted here when the corners are laid. It is important that he enter tightly.

Tiled profile is intended not only for decorative design. It makes surfaces smooth during finishing work. For projecting corners, trilateral elements are provided. They allow you to close the connection in three planes. They are placed at the junction of finishing profiles located at right angles.

Doors for doors and windows

These products have two sides. One of them is narrow. The design fits snugly in those places where the frame fits into the wall. If the corner is made of MDF, it is better to put it outside.

A good solution would be to use them for doors, windows, loggias and balconies. The strips are able to reliably close the mounting foam, protecting it from moisture and sunlight. Their decorative qualities are magnificent. When facing slopes, they are not an obligatory component. You can use a putty with further painting and sealant.

Corner for bathrooms

PVC corners designed to seal joints in the bathroom are usually made in white light. You can use color options if the bathroom is decorated in a modern design. Corner ability to protect walls from moisture. Also, its use serves as a good prophylaxis of the fungus. Plastic corners of various shades are used to protect both the convex and concave corners of the walls, washbasins, showers and installation. There are special PVC borders for installation under tiles.

Profiles for exterior and interior corners

Perforated PVC profiles are used to align the corners during finishing with drywall or conventional plaster. It is fixed directly to the solution, which is applied to the finishing sheets. It turns out that they assume the function of beacons. They also additionally strengthen the walls.

For outdoor work, it is better to use metal products. Plastic corners can be used when it comes to faking indirect corners. They are able to bend and take the form of the surface on which they are fixed.

For baseboards and ceiling

As soon as the frame of the suspended ceiling is closed with PVC film or drywall, it is necessary to carry out additional decoration of the protrusion. To skirting boards better fit to the surface, apply concave elements. They can be of different colors and match the appearance of the lining. Skirting boards are designed for maximum fit to the wall. But sometimes it happens that behind them are wires or pipes of the heated floor. Therefore, it is necessary to leave a slight gap for the expansion of linoleum and laminate.

You can use for this purpose a profile of the same shade as the baseboard. The corner must be fixed on the opposite surface, allowing the material to move freely in case of deformation. For the decoration of corners when working with multi-level ceilings, polyurethane profiles are used. They have sides 10 and 15 mm long. These products have flexibility, easily repeat the shape of the protrusion. In most cases, white models are in demand. A profile is not a required element for attaching the protrusions to the ceiling. It is used exclusively when necessary..

Demanded materials for work

Corners, regardless of the premises, where their capitals, are internal and external. The inner corners are hard to reach, but the outer ones are almost always open. For this reason, they suffer more often. They are scratched by pets. Often, when moving furniture and household appliances through doors, scratches form on them.

Most often for the decoration of corners use materials:

  • polystyrene foam
  • galvanized metal profile,
  • wood
  • decorative rock.

Plastic corners hold strong leadership because they:

  • presented in a wide range of shades,
  • quite flexible and can adapt to any surface.

Installation of plastic corners is carried out only after all other finishing work is completed. Fix them on the walls with mounting glue for plastic products. The length of the corners reaches 2.5 m. The width varies, so the profiles can be both narrow and wide.

To choose the right angle in width, you need to measure the curvature of the angle. If this indicator is large, it is better to take profiles of greater width. Beginners in the field of finishing work can recommend corners of medium width.

Fixing Tips

The algorithm for fixing a plastic corner on the surface of the walls is as follows:

  1. Angle deviations are measured with a building level.
  2. Mix the solution on the basis of a dry putty mixture to the desired consistency.
  3. The mixture is applied with a regular spatula, leveled with an angular tool so that the angle takes a rectangular shape.
  4. As soon as the corner is completely dry, apply a perforated corner of PVC and cover it with a layer of finishing putty.

  1. Apply glue to the inner surface of the corner with a distance of 30 to 50 mm. This should be done as if a dashed line is drawn.
  2. After some time, the glue acquires optimal viscosity. About which consistency is desired in this case can be found in the instructions for the glue. These indicators are individual, depending on the manufacturer.
  3. Apply a plastic profile to the surface of the corner and fix it on top with masking tape.
  4. To fix the corners, you can also use liquid nails or colorless silicone.

Styrofoam corners

Expanded polystyrene is a non-combustible material. The corners made from it have the following advantages:

  • do not remove dirt
  • do not absorb moisture.

You can use these products in rooms with different temperature conditions. Such profiles lend themselves to staining. They are created by pressing and are available in various forms.

The use of polystyrene foam corners in decoration can be considered justified if the apartment has a low passability of residents. Such decorative elements not only protect corners, but also do an excellent job with the aesthetic function. They are fixed as a special glue, regular acrylic sealant.

Wooden models

Wood products also have a number of advantages:

  • decorative appearance
  • environmental friendliness
  • the possibility of arranging a thread.

It is only important to observe the following recommendations:

  • do not use wooden corners in rooms with high humidity,
  • if regular temperature changes are noted in the room, the use of wooden corners is not recommended.

Stone for decoration

Recently, stone has increasingly been used in interior decoration. This material looks best when arranging external corners. If they have significant deviations from the geometric shape, then the stone will look especially appropriate. Indeed, thanks to this, you do not have to deal with alignment of corners and walls.

Before laying decorative stone, you need to prepare the surface. It should be cleaned of dust, dirt, old finishing coat and primed. If the surface is too dry, it must be moistened. This provides better absorption of the adhesive into the structure of the working wall.

First, the adhesive is diluted according to the instructions. It retains its properties for 2 hours. It is better to cook it in a plastic container using a drill mixer with nozzles.

After mixing, the glue is left for several minutes. Mix the mixture thoroughly. At least 6 kg of mortar is usually required per square meter of area.

The stone is pressed against the surface with force. After that, the building level checks the correctness of its installation. The stone is laid in three rows and left for some time. The glue dries after 2 hours. If this period is not maintained, the laying of subsequent rows will be fragile, and the structure will collapse under its own weight.

Why plaster surfaces

Walls and their borders are often full of irregularities, which, apart from plaster, can not be tampered with, because only it is close in structure to the material of the walls, and it is also easy to glue on it and lay tiles. Of course, it is possible, for example, to paste wallpaper on a “hole” wall, but in those places where there are “holes” on the wall, there will be either a recess or an air pocket, in any case the wallpaper will not work out even. With a tile all is even worse - it will simply fall off.

What is the corner for?

Plastering smooth surfaces is not difficult - just need to “shoot” the solution and align it with the plane of the wall. It is a completely different matter to process the corners, because it is almost impossible to patch chips and cracks at the corners with conventional means, so you will need to use a special tool here - a plaster corner.

How does he work

Briefly, its principle of operation is as follows - with the help of a bent long metal or plastic plate, which is installed at an angle, creating an even surface there, a base is formed, which will then be processed with a solution. The holes are needed so that the mixture passes freely through them (in both directions), that is, so that the defects fill up, and the excess goes outside, in addition, applying holes to the product (perforation) reduces its mass, thereby reducing the load on the solution and adhesion increases.

Is it possible to make a corner without a corner?

By and large, yes. But you need to understand that the corner pad is used not only to form a joint of the wall surfaces, but also to strengthen it, to make it resistant to mechanical damage. Without a lining, your corner will crack from the slightest jolt, and if we are talking about an apartment, you will have to plaster it again after about half a year. Finishing without overlays is used when there is absolutely no threat of shock loads, which is extremely rare.

Is there a difference between which corner to apply?

There is no doubt a difference, because they, like any other product, differ in quality. There are cheap aluminum and expensive steel corners, and there are also plastic ones. Of course, the strength of the entire structure depends on the type of material, therefore, if you want the wall to last for more than a dozen years, you should give preference to a higher-quality expensive corner, in addition, steel holds shock very well and does not crumble from the slightest push.

Metals are sensitive to the effects of alkaline and acidic environments, so they are used mainly when latex, gypsum or acrylic is used as finishing materials.

  • Aluminum. Lining of this material is the cheapest and most common. They have good corrosion resistance, due to their lightness, they adhere well to the wall and do not move during operation. But, since aluminum is a very soft metal, its impact resistance and resistance to mechanical damage is minimal. This can lead to the fact that from a weak blow, not only the plaster crack, but the corner will bend, which means that it will be necessary to carry out not just cosmetic repairs, but a thorough one, with the entire lining replaced. That is why aluminum corners are not used where there is an increased risk of shock load on the walls, for example, in enterprises, in loading shops or in shops. Where workers often fight against corners, steel should be used.
  • Galvanized steel is not so common, since it is much more expensive than aluminum, but at the same time it has higher strength characteristics. Due to this, steel corners hold impacts very well and do not bend even from a very large-scale collision, however this metal is heavier than aluminum, so the technology for installing steel corners is somewhat different. It must be borne in mind that due to its mass, the pad will peel off or slide down. In addition, it is important not to damage the galvanizing, because it protects the steel from rust. The product should be trimmed with special scissors for metal, and in no case not a grinder, so that after a few years the repair does not have to be done again.

Shaped metal plates

The appearance of the product can be completely different, depending on the purpose of the repair, but basically it’s just a strip of steel or aluminum, bent at a right angle, in which many small holes are drilled. The thickness of the lining is small - a little more than half a millimeter. Such simple corners are used for dry plastering, and if moisture is present in the process, an additional metal mesh is used, which increases adhesion to the wall due to the fact that more solution is in contact with the product. Rounded corners are very rarely made of metal, because, as a rule, it is required that the radius of curvature can be changed, and in the case of such durable materials this is simply impossible.

Plastic Products

In terms of strength, plastic is inferior to metals, and even aluminum, because if the latter simply bends from the impact without causing further damage to the plaster, then the plastic immediately cracks. In order to achieve at least some strength of the product, the corner has to be made thick, and the plaster, respectively, applied with a thin layer. However, it has an advantage in rooms with high humidity - it is completely not afraid of corrosion, therefore it is usually used in such cases.

In addition, it is much easier to make a curved corner from plastic (of course, from the point of view of geometry, this will not be a corner, but an arc, but they call it anyway) with an arbitrary variable bending radius. After all, plastic is very malleable, and it is difficult to bend an aluminum plate due to its long length. A product with an adjustable angle for plastic is generally a typical phenomenon, since it bends very easily, without violating the integrity of the structure.

Chemical inertness of plastic corners

Since plastic reacts very poorly with other substances, it is advantageous to use it in rooms where reagents are used or, for example, in chemical industries. Since the air in these places contains a certain concentration of alkalis and acids, they are also absorbed into the walls, adversely affecting materials. As a rule, metals under the plaster become worthless after a few years.

The corner of what material is best for a wooden wall

The tree itself is strong enough, especially when it comes to timber, and it does not need additional reinforcement, so here you can save on material. However, plastic should not be used, unless the corner is combined with a built-in metal mesh. The fact is that wood does not hold stucco well, and therefore, when finishing wooden houses, they use nets of very large areas, ideally covering the entire wall - then the stucco will last longer. In general, in such cases, preference is usually given to either aluminum or combination plastic products.

Wall preparation

In order for the plaster to hold firmly, everything that is staggering should be broken off so that a monolithic structure remains without any cracks and kinks. Do not spare the solution, because in the end the angle will only be stronger. When you beat off all the loose parts, you should proceed to cleaning and priming. Remove dust from the surface with a special brush (but it is also possible with a simple rag), then ground the wall in order to ensure reliable adhesion to the solution.

Sometimes the wall joint is so damaged that it does not even attach a corner, because there is simply nowhere to go. In such cases, the surface is pre-plastered, preparing the base, and only then a corner pad is installed on it.

And the last stage of preparation is the installation of beacons, which contribute to a more accurate location of the corner, with minimal deviations.

Product Installation

First you need to shade the pad. Cut it with scissors for metal if it is steel or aluminum, or with a knife if it is plastic. Next, apply the solution to the wall and lay the product at an angle. Press it lightly so that the solution begins to seep through the holes, and if there is one, press the mesh as hard as possible. Check the installation using the level, and do not forget to check with the beacons.

If the cover is made of heavy materials such as steel, then due to its large mass it will slide down a bit, so it will be useful to hold it for some time, especially if you fasten it to the ceiling.

Using Mounts

The holes in the corners are made not only to increase traction, facilitate construction and ensure the passage of the solution, but also in order to use screw fasteners in some cases. Plastic sleeves are driven into the hardened plaster, into which stainless screws are then screwed. Such fastening allows you to significantly enhance the grip, but is used when it is not possible to use the grid. And to use them at the same time there is practically no sense, unless you install a corner in the elephant nursery.

When the solution under the pad dries

After the overlay firmly adheres to the wall, you should begin to plaster the outer part of the corner, and alignment. First of all, they plaster everything that is next to the overlay to get an approximate thickness of the layer applied to the corner. When you level the surface of the wall and the surface of the corner, begin to smooth the plaster, but do not get to fanaticism - anyway then, when it dries, it will need to be processed with sandpaper.

How to check the work

After completing each step, you must ensure that it was completed correctly. So, if in the middle of the work you notice that the wall was poorly cleaned, and the broken pieces of plaster hang on it, do not be lazy, remove the corner and do it all over again, so you will significantly increase the service life of the structure. If, for example, you notice that you have pressed the corner to the solution too hard, so that it all flows out through the perforation, remove it and put the plaster on a new one, because the final result of your work most depends on such trifles.

Is it worth it to do the plastering of the corner yourself, or is it better to entrust this to the master?

On the Internet today you can find a huge number of articles and training videos on all types of construction and repair work. There are so many of them that it seems that anyone can build a house and make repairs in it on their own, using only these benefits. But this is not so. The fact is that here you need not only knowledge of how to do, but also skill, that is, experience. Because, for example, you can know how to hammer a nail, but not be able to do it in practice, the nail will hammer crookedly, your finger will be damaged, etc. If you ever glued wallpaper, you should know that even in such a seemingly simple lesson you often have to redo everything several times, to say nothing of plaster. The master, who not only knows, but also knows how, will set you a quality angle in the shortest time, while you can do other more important things.
