Most muscle cramps are what doctors call “benign” events that require no treatment and go away on their own in a short time. Stress and anxiety are often to blame. However, muscle twitching can sometimes be a symptom of more serious conditions requiring quick medical attention. How you feel about jerking depends on its root cause. You may need to complete one or all of the following steps to get relief.

Wait a few days to see if they are staggering. Most muscle twitches do not require treatment at all. Often cramps come and go within a few days, and then disappear mysteriously as they appeared.

Drink more fluids. Dehydration can sometimes cause a mutation. Add more caffeine-free water and drinks to your diet.

Fighting stress and anxiety, which can sometimes cause muscle twitching, causing time to rest and relax. Do everything to help you relax. Take a walk, do yoga, go to the gym for a workout, watch your favorite movie or TV show, or hug a good book.

Reduce caffeine intake. Caffeine can help dehydrate you and make you feel more anxious. Limit the amount of caffeine with caffeine, tea, and soda in your diet.

Use some lubricated eye drops if cramps affect your eyes. Extra sleep can also help.

Eat foods rich in calcium and magnesium, or take supplements. Dr. Andrew Weil says both minerals are key to healthy neurological function and muscle control. If you want to take supplements, Weil recommends starting with about 200 mg of magnesium per day and about 400 mg of calcium.

Consult your doctor to find out if any of your medicines can cause muscle cramps as a side effect. If medications are to blame, ask your doctor about alternative treatments.

Causes of Seizures

The causes of this phenomenon can be many factors. The most common are:

  • Overexertion or injury during exercise,
  • Subcooling, especially in cold water,
  • Dehydration
  • A lack of blood minerals, such as calcium or potassium,
  • Wrong posture for quite some time,
  • Pregnancy,
  • Some diseases, such as kidney, thyroid gland, or peripheral arteries,
  • Taking certain types of medications, such as birth control, statins, and steroids.

How to stop muscle cramps?

There are several ways to get rid of this phenomenon:

  • Applying ice wrapped in fabric or a cold compress,
  • Massage and muscle strain
  • Using a heating pad. A warm bath or shower is also suitable,
  • Anesthesia with drugs, for example, ibuprofen.

In this case, take all the medications only as prescribed by the doctor, do not self-medicate. Drinking more fluids will reduce the risk of seizures.

If you think that some medicine could be the culprit, then stop taking the drug and seek medical advice in the near future.

Prevention of muscle cramps

To prevent the occurrence of seizures, it is enough to know and follow a few simple rules:

  • Do not increase physical activity dramatically. Training is best done gradually.
  • Stretch your muscles daily. This will be especially useful before the beginning of sports exercises and going to bed. When stretching, do not make sudden movements to avoid injuries.
  • Eat balanced. Especially watch for enough potassium, calcium, and magnesium in your diet.
  • Use vitamins. Indeed, a deficiency of some of them, for example, pyridoxine (B6) or pantothenic acid (B5), can cause their occurrence.
  • Make sure your body does not suffer from dehydration. To do this, it will be useful to reduce the amount of caffeine and alcohol consumed and drink as much fluid as possible.

If you have muscle cramps and cramps that bother you constantly and are characterized by intensity and pain, be sure to consult a good specialist. With frequent cramps that prevent normal sleep, the doctor after examination and, if necessary, tests will prescribe medications that reduce muscle tension. It is also worth remembering that leg cramps can be a symptom of a disease called "restless legs syndrome", which is neurological in nature. Although most often muscle cramps are not a sign of a serious illness.
